Berlin Bicycle Deep Freeze

Berlin - Motion
I was speaking in Berlin last week but I had some moments to spare to document the bicycle users of Berlin getting on with it on a bitterly cold Friday morning.

Montreal Bicycle Winter

Montreal Winter Cycle Chic_2
I was in Montreal last week and it was brilliant to see so many bicycles on the streets. I didn't have a chance to photograph too much because of work, but here are some shots from the city's streets.

The Mad Hatter

Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2012 - 3211
With winter comes a wonderful assortment of hats and caps. Above its all black with a black bike and hand bag to go along. All of it topped of with an elegant fur Cossack hat - of course also in traditional black.

Below another stylish rider with a grey knit sur la tete set slightly to the side - as it should be.

Now for once we have a gentleman who is truly into style. Love that red/black Pork Pie Hat to go with his red scarf. Made sure to take his picture with the white background to make it easier to discern the hat's colours.

Some people are born with style. Simple, still beautiful combination of white knit beanie hat and matching gloves. And a glide to match!
Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2012 - 3116

Finally, a gray fur trapper hat - and an alternative solution with a simple scarf to go.

Winter Sniffles

Winter
It may be Monumental Motion, the constant, human-powered structure that is bicycle culture in Copenhagen, but hey... there are wonderful little human moments on every stretch of cycle track.

It's winter and even though we're waiting for the snow this year, our noses do that winter thang... they run.

Scarf Superlatives

Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2011 - 2778

Super sized scarves abound here in Copenhagen. And not only during the cold season. Above a mystical motif scarf set as tie. And below a knit four colour scarf to match her jacket. Even her bike, gloves and jeans match the rest of the outfit!

Large Tartan infinity scarf.

Not quite sure if its a broad scarf or an infinity scarf he is using - but its super sized for sure!
Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2011 - 3016

Double trouble. The ultimate scarf superlative. Large knit infinity scarf with large folded knit scarf on top! Ride cool - stay warm.

Grey Eminence

Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2011 - 1500
Grey is a color of choice this winter in Copenhagen. Preferably spun in natural wool to underline the understated elegant streak. Easy to accessorize. Black/White, Red/Green. Grey is easy on the eyes and works well with almost everything.

Besides looking good, wool is great for keeping you warm on a cold morning ride. There are a lot of comfortable ride-friendly half-length coats and capes to choose from. Especially lots of Surtout drawn coats - with over-sized buttons to match. Above double lined buttons with dark-grey Grand Beret on top and below single line buttons topped off with a matching grey Beanie Hat.
Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2011 - 1022

Perfectly presentable and entirely practical. Top buttons only make for maximum mobility, with a wide overlap to avoid adverse winds creeping in. Oversized scarf and grey bag to go.
Copenhagen Bikehaven by Mellbin 2011 - 0940

Grey poncho. Turquoise dress. Black leggings. All draped in the hazy morning greyness. The large buttons are set over her left shoulder and - another Copenhagen favourite - the mobile phone in her right hand.

I Love the Wind!

We're very pleased here at Cycle Chic to have a new photographer on board. Franz-Michael. While Mikael gets called "The Danish Bicycle Ambassador", it's a pleasure to have a real ambassador in our ranks. Franz-Michael has served Queen and Country as Danish ambassador to various countries including Afghanistan and Japan. In fact, Mikael met Franz-Michael in Tokyo a couple of years ago on Her Majesty's Bicycle Service. Several conversations about photography on various high-speed trains around Japan and here we are. Back in the 'hood with Franz-Michael's view on Cycle Chic. We're looking forward to seeing his regular posts here on the blog.

One of privileges of biking is having the wind first gently comb your hair and then having a gust rearrange it into an unruly mess. Today the winds were strong, and so the heavenly hair dresser decided to disrupt every strand of hair and strip of clothing that was not tied down:

Even a hair band and a pony tail could be unfurled:

This is from another windy day just to show how a scarf impromptu can be used to create an illusion of order while riding:

Casual, alert, fresh in for work - and Thank God its Friday!:

At nighttime it was still blowing hard outside. Her elegantly set Anglo-basque Beret was lifted away like a flying saucer, but she managed to grab it before it flew away:

The Winter Jinx Post

Suck it up buttercup
I know, I know. We don't want to think about it. Winter.

The last two winters in Copenhagen - and most of Europe - have been bitter cold. Sub-zero temperatures hitting -30 C with the wind chill and snowstorm after snowstorm rolling in.

Remember, open your closet... it's filled with cycling clothes.

So let's try to jinx winter by posting about winter cycling. It's a long shot, but we're willing to give it a go.
